The hidden history of my village
I wanted to find and share with you the history of my village. At the beginning of doing this research I thought there is nothing special about our history but It surprised me how people lived back in the past and how our village has developed throughout years. The village was created in 1427 by Monks. That’s the reason why our village is called Mníšany. It is derived from slovak word Mnísi.
Its inhabitants dealt in mining and mainly with copper, gold and silver mining. In 16th century, many sheep were bred here. By 17th century, the community had 33 peasants and 9 shepherds.
As years went by, people started to consider writing some information into Chronicle. The Chronicle of Mníšany was first handwritten in 1933.
“People are very loyal and brave. They are hard-working and too modest.” written by the mayor Juraj Gablovský in the Chronicle.
In 1786, the school was finally opened. Before, students’d had to go to a village nearby to educate themselves. The school was very small and only a few teachers worked there.
By 1940, A culture house was being built. People were very happy about this. They started to organize big parties. And occasionally, actors came to show us some perfomances.
My grandmother told me that living in the past was better than now. They were not wealthy but they were happier. They enjoyed life and behaved kindly to others.
Our biggest rarity is a tunnel called Viadukt. During the second world war, the railways were built across the country. The tunnel was meant to connect villages. At first, almost 600 workers took part on the construction. The process were going well until the end of second world war, when all was cancelled. It should have served for transport but it has never been done. Nowadays, it is only an attraction for tourists.
